Mud to Parks

Midwest Engineering Associates, Inc. was contracted by the City of East Peoria to prepare plans & bidding documents, and construction observation.

This project consisted of dredging recreational access channels from two marinas in East Peoria, Illinois to the Illinois River Channel. The sediment removed from the channel was then placed on barges and transported to a brownfield site in South Chicago, where it was used as fill material to construct a park. The project was a joint collaboration between the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center, the Chicago Park District, and the City of East Peoria.

The project consisted of the following:
- Dredged approximately 91,500 tons of sediment
- Transported approximately 60 barges from East Peoria, IL to South Chicago, Illinois
- Unloaded the barges and conditioned the soil that was used as embankment for the park
- Vegetated the embankment with native grasses
